Page Program
WHAT IS A SENATE PAGE?
The Kansas Senate operates a program that allows a limited number of young people to come to Topeka for one day when the Senate is in session (January through April 2010) to serve as Senate pages. Pages run errands, deliver mail and messages, and complete other tasks that help the legislature to complete its day-to-day operation. Senate pages ordinarily have the opportunity to: (a) sit in the Senate during the daily session; (b) meet the governor; (c) visit with Senator King, and (d) see up close how state government really works.
WHO CAN BE A SENATE PAGE?
Senate pages must be at least 12 years of age and still attend middle school or high school. Each year, Senator Jeff King is allowed a limited number of pages, all of whom live in the 15th Senate District. The 15th district include Iola, Humboldt, Marmaton Valley, Garnett, Crest, Cedar Vale, Chautauqua Co Community, Burlington, LeRoy-Gridley, West Elk, Elk Valley, West Franklin, Caney Valley, Independence, Cherryvale, Altoona-Midway, Neodesha, Fredonia, and Woodson public school districts, as well as several private schools and numerous families who home school their children. Senator King will work hard to ensure that students from all across his district and from all walks of life have the opportunity to serve as Senate pages If there are more applicants than positions available, preference will be given to older applicants who are close to graduation from high school and younger applicants will be encouraged to re-apply the following year.
HOW DO I APPLY?
Senator King chooses his pages from applications submitted by interested students. Applications are available now for the 2011 legislative session and must be submitted not later than February 15, 2011. Applicants will be notified in February whether they have been selected to page during this year's legislative session.
There are four ways to obtain an application:
- Fill out the Online Page Application
- Click and download the Senate Page Application and email to jeffkingks@hotmail.com (preferred method);
- Call or write to Senator King and request that an application be sent to you by U.S. mail (See Contact Jeff for addresses and telephone numbers); or
- Ask your public school's superintendent for a copy.
If you are a young person at least age 12, are interested in government, and live in the 15th Senate District, you should consider applying to serve as a page for Senator Jeff King!
