Quick Facts About the 15th District
The 15th State Senate District in eastern Kansas stretches from Caney
and the Oklahoma border on the south to Williamsburg and Interstate 35
on the north. It extends from Cedar Vale on the west to Savonburg on
the east. It covers all of five counties and parts of four others. It
is home to 66,629 people, according to the 2002 U.S. Census.
The district is home to Allen County Community College and Independence
Community College. Some of its major employers include the Wolf Creek
nuclear power plant in Coffey County, two of the state's three cement
mills (LaFarge in Fredonia and Monarch in Humboldt), Cessna Aircraft's
single-engine and small-jet manufacturing plant in Independence, the
Russell Stover candy plant in Iola, and the Cobalt Boats plant in
Neodesha. There are numerous other industries in the district.
Production agriculture remains a vital part of the economy for this
largely rural district. Tourism also is a growing element of the
economy, and the district is home to numerous tourist attractions
including the Little House on the Prairie in Montgomery County and the
Buster Keaton festival in Allen County and associated museum in Woodson
